Challenge Events
Collection System Event
The event simulates connecting a 4-inch PVC lateral sewer to an existing 8-inch PVC sewer pipe while in service (the "wet" pipe), and the programming of an automatic sampler.
Laboratory Event
Perform all steps of a BOD analysis using Thermo Scientific equipment following all method requirements as outlined in Standard Methods 18th edition 5210B, with the exception of using tranfer pipets instead of wide bore volumetrics for planting seed correction series and sample.
Pump Maintenance Event
The purpose of this event is to test the skills of a maintenance/operating team to respond to a lift station pumping outage. A 4" diesel driven solids-handling trailer mounted pumpset will be used to respond to the need for an emergency back up pump at a lift station.
Safety Event
A coworker is found at the bottom of a (confined space) lift station unconscious. It is suspected that he/she has been overcome with an unknown chemical gas or lack of oxygen. The in-plant rescue team is called to respond. The electrical safety switch is placed in the off position and properly locked out. A confined space entry permit is filled out and readings are taken for oxygen, combustible gas and hydrogen sulfide. Team members assemble the non-entry rescue system, remove the manhole cover, and ventilate the space. Entrants are lowered into the manhole to place a full body harness on the victim and lift him/her out of the space. All entrants are removed from the space and equipment is disassembled.
Process Control Event
The event is a test to for the team to demonstrate their accumulated knowledge of wastewater treatment and skill in plant process control. The mandatory problems will be based on the EPA 3320 NPDES DMR. The test will include a data sheet showing a month's worth of plant effluent data, a discharge permit table and any other relevant data. Some of the areas covered include: preliminary treatment, odor control, primary treatment, secondary treatment, advanced treatment, pumping, maintenance, laboratory, safety, flow measurement, and metering.
